Dota 2 positions run from 1 to 5 in order of farm priority. Position 1 is the safe lane carry, 2 is mid, 3 is the offlaner, 4 is the roaming soft support and 5 is the hard support who babysits the carry. Lower numbers take more gold and items; higher numbers buy wards and create space.
This guide covers each position's lane, farm priority and main jobs, example hero types for each role, and how ranked Role Queue works after patch 7.41e. It is current as of October 2026. For a cross-game view of team roles, see our roles explained hub.
What do the numbers 1 to 5 mean in Dota 2?
The numbers are a farm priority order. Position 1 needs the most gold and Position 5 needs the least, per Hotspawn. There are only so many creep waves and neutral camps on each side of the map, so not everyone can farm at once. The team agrees on who gets resources first.
The two core lanes outside mid are named by tower distance. The safe lane is the side lane closest to your own jungle and fountain, and the offlane is the opposite side lane, where your towers are farther away and the lane is harder to hold.
| Position | Role | Lane | Farm priority | Main job |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Carry | Safe lane with Pos 5 | Highest | Farm core items, win late fights |
| 2 | Mid | Mid lane, solo | Second | Win the 1v1, control tempo, rotate |
| 3 | Offlane | Offlane with Pos 4 | Third | Pressure the enemy carry, initiate, front fights |
| 4 | Soft support | Offlane, then roams | Fourth | Gank, help mid with runes, ward |
| 5 | Hard support | Safe lane with Pos 1 | Lowest | Protect the carry, vision, pulls and stacks |
What does a Position 1 carry do?
The carry plays the safe lane with the hard support and has the highest farm priority. The goal is to survive the lane, finish core items quickly and become the team's main damage threat later on, per Hotspawn. Carries usually deal heavy physical damage, and the name comes from literally carrying the team late in the game, per Esports.gg.
- Early: last hit every creep you can and avoid dying.
- Mid game: farm efficiently, join fights you can win, take towers.
- Classic hero types: agility or strength cores that scale with items, such as Phantom Assassin, Juggernaut and Sven.
What does a Position 2 mid player do?
Mid plays alone in the middle lane, so they collect all the lane's gold and experience. That solo advantage lets a strong mid snowball, per Esports.gg. After the lane, mid controls the game's tempo: ganking side lanes, rotating with runes and forcing fights while their levels are high, per Hotspawn.
- Key skills: last hitting under pressure, rune timing and knowing when to leave lane.
- Classic hero types: mobile, level-hungry heroes such as Storm Spirit, Queen of Pain and Leshrac.
What does a Position 3 offlaner do?
The offlaner plays the hardest lane, usually with the soft support, against the enemy carry and hard support. Their job is to pressure the enemy carry, then become the team's front line with initiation or aura items, per Hotspawn. Offlaners have farm priority over supports and often rush teamfight items, per Esports.gg.
- Key skills: surviving tough lanes, knowing when to start a fight and soaking damage.
- Classic hero types: durable initiators such as Axe, Tidehunter and Mars.
What does a Position 4 soft support do?
The soft support starts in the offlane but leaves often to roam. They gank other lanes, help the mid player take Power Runes, and place and remove wards, per Hotspawn. Position 4 has more farm than Position 5 and often needs a few items to be at its best.
- Key skills: map awareness, timing rotations and creating chaos without dying for nothing.
- Classic hero types: playmakers with mobility or disables, such as Earth Spirit, Tusk and Spirit Breaker, per Esports.gg.
What does a Position 5 hard support do?
The hard support stays in the safe lane to protect the carry. They buy regeneration, observer and sentry wards and smokes, pull and stack neutral camps, and save teammates in fights, per Hotspawn. Position 5 has the lowest farm priority and often spends gold on the team rather than on items for themselves.
- Key skills: lane control, vision placement and positioning so you are not caught first.
- Classic hero types: heroes with heals, saves or strong disables, such as Dazzle, Crystal Maiden and Lion.
Dota 2 also tags heroes with roles like Carry, Support, Nuker, Disabler, Initiator, Durable, Escape and Pusher, per Liquipedia. Those tags describe a hero's strengths, while positions describe your job in a specific match. The same hero can sometimes fill more than one position. For which heroes are strong this patch, check our Dota 2 hero tier list.
How does Role Queue work in Dota 2 ranked?
Ranked Roles lets you choose which positions you are willing to play before you queue. Valve replaced the old Core and Support split with a single rank that uses a handicap for each of the five roles. When you queue for your best roles, the matchmaker uses your full MMR. When you queue for weaker roles, it places you into games at a lower MMR, per Blue's News. You can see your role adjustments in the Role Queue menu.
Patch 7.41e, released on July 31, 2026, made a few changes, per Fragster:
- Ranked Classic removed: Random Draft and Ranked Classic left the ranked mode pool.
- Role Queue Tokens: new players who unlock ranked receive five tokens.
- Auto-select all roles: an option to select every role once your tokens run out, which is off by default.
Valve has long rewarded flexible players. When the system first launched in 2019, solo players who queued with every role selected earned extra fast-queue games, per ONE Esports.
Which Dota 2 position should you play?
Pick the job that matches how you like to play, then stick with it while you learn:
- Like farming and big late fights? Try Position 1.
- Enjoy 1v1 duels and fast decisions? Try Position 2.
- Like starting fights and being tanky? Try Position 3.
- Love roaming and making plays? Try Position 4.
- Prefer vision, saves and team play? Try Position 5.
One or two positions with a small hero pool is the fastest way to improve. Our how to rank up in Dota 2 guide explains why, and our Dota 2 MMR table shows what each medal needs.

Frequently asked questions
What are the 5 positions in Dota 2?
Dota 2 has five positions, numbered by farm priority. Position 1 is the carry in the safe lane. Position 2 is the solo mid player. Position 3 is the offlaner, who plays the harder side lane. Position 4 is the soft support, who starts in the offlane and then roams. Position 5 is the hard support, who protects the carry in the safe lane and handles vision, pulls and stacks. Lower numbers get more gold and items.
What is the difference between Position 4 and Position 5?
Both are supports, but they do different jobs. Position 4, the soft support, starts in the offlane with the offlaner and then roams to gank lanes, help mid take Power Runes and ward the map. It has slightly more farm and often needs a few items. Position 5, the hard support, stays in the safe lane to protect the carry, buys wards, smokes and regeneration, pulls and stacks camps, and has the lowest farm priority.
What is the easiest position for beginners in Dota 2?
There is no single easiest position, but many new players start with Position 5 or Position 1. Position 5 teaches vision, map awareness and positioning without the pressure of being the main damage dealer. Position 1 teaches last hitting and farming patterns. Mid is often the hardest to learn because the 1v1 lane and rune timings punish mistakes quickly. Whichever you choose, keep a small hero pool so you can focus on the role itself.
How does Role Queue work in Dota 2?
Ranked Roles lets you pick which positions you will play before queuing. Valve uses one rank with a handicap for each of the five roles. Queuing for your best roles uses your full MMR, while queuing for weaker roles places you at a lower MMR. Patch 7.41e removed Ranked Classic and Random Draft from the ranked pool, gave new ranked players five Role Queue Tokens, and added an optional auto-select all roles setting that is off by default.
Why is it called the safe lane and the offlane?
The names come from how easy each side lane is to hold. The safe lane is closer to your own jungle and fountain, so it is safer for the carry to farm with the hard support nearby. The offlane is the opposite side lane, where your towers are farther away and the enemy carry and hard support are waiting. The offlaner needs to survive there and pressure the enemy carry, which is why durable heroes are common in that role.
Are hero roles the same as positions in Dota 2?
No. Hero roles are tags Valve gives each hero, such as Carry, Support, Nuker, Disabler, Initiator, Durable, Escape and Pusher. They describe what a hero is good at. Positions describe your job in a specific match, based on lane and farm priority. Many heroes can fill more than one position depending on the draft and the items you build.
