A rank distribution shows what share of a game's ranked players sit in each tier, so you can see how rare your rank is. Your percentile is the share of players ranked below you. Distributions differ by game, region and season, and they shift as resets and placements play out.
Launching soon. Live distributions for each game arrive with the stats service, labelled with date, region, season and sample size. Get notified when it goes live.
What does a rank distribution tell you?
Most ladders look like a hill: lots of players in the middle tiers and a thin slice at the top. The distribution tells you how big each slice is, which is more meaningful than the badge name alone.
Some games cap the very top. Riot's support site lists regional caps for League's apex tiers, for example 700 Grandmaster and 300 Challenger in Solo/Duo on NA, EUW, KR and SEA (Riot Support, checked October 2026).
How do rank percentiles work?
A percentile is the share of players ranked below you on the same ladder. Top 10 percent and 90th percentile mean the same thing.
| Term | Meaning | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Percentile | Share of players below you | 90th percentile = higher than 90% |
| Top X% | Share of players at or above you | Top 10% = 90th percentile |
| Cumulative share | Running total from the bottom tier up | Used to place each rank on the curve |
What changes a percentile?
The ladder you compare against. Region, queue (Solo/Duo vs Flex in League, role queue vs open queue in Overwatch 2) and season all change who is in the pool.
Why do distributions shift each season?
Resets and placements
Early in a season many players start below their usual rank and climb back, so the curve moves up over weeks.
System changes
Publishers add tiers, change divisions or retune points, which redraws the whole distribution.
Activity rules
League applies 75 LP daily decay to inactive Master+ players, per Riot Support, and Valorant requires a game every 7 days to stay on the leaderboard.
That is why every RankSurge distribution will carry a date and season label. A screenshot from last season can be badly out of date.
Where can I see each game's distribution?
Each game hub will host its own chart when stats go live: Valorant, League of Legends, CS2, Dota 2, Deadlock, Destiny 2, Marvel Rivals and Overwatch 2.
We publish no percentages we cannot source. Distributions come from visible ranks only; RankSurge never estimates hidden MMR.
Find your own spot with the Player Lookup, then see the top of each ladder on Leaderboards.
Frequently asked questions
What is a rank distribution?
A rank distribution shows how a game's ranked players are spread across its tiers, usually as the share of players in each rank. It tells you whether a rank is common or rare. Most competitive games have far more players in the middle tiers than at the top, and the very top tiers in some games are capped to a fixed number of players per region.
What does a percentile mean for my rank?
A percentile tells you what share of ranked players sit below you. If your rank is in the 80th percentile, you are ranked higher than about 80 percent of that ladder's players. Being in the top 20 percent and the 80th percentile mean the same thing. Percentiles only compare you with people on the same ladder, region and season.
Why does the rank distribution change during a season?
At the start of a season, resets and placement matches push many players lower than where they finish. As people play, they climb back toward their usual rank, so the middle and upper tiers fill up over time. Ranked system changes, new players and inactivity rules such as League of Legends decay in the apex tiers also shift the curve.
Why doesn't RankSurge publish exact rank percentages yet?
We only publish numbers we can source. Publishers rarely release complete official distributions, and third-party figures depend on which players a site happens to track. Our distributions will go live with the stats service, labelled with the date, region, season and sample size. Until then we will not quote unverified percentages.
Is a rank distribution the same in every region?
No. Each region has its own ladder, player base and sometimes its own rules. Riot sets regional caps for League's Grandmaster and Challenger tiers, and Valorant's Radiant requires a regional Rank Rating threshold plus a top-500 spot in that region. A rank can be rarer in one region than another.
Does the distribution show hidden MMR?
No. A distribution is built from visible ranks only. RankSurge does not estimate hidden MMR or ELO, and Riot's developer policy prohibits MMR or ELO calculators for its games. Use the distribution to see where a rank sits, and use the Rank Goal Planner if you want to set a target.
