CS2 has three main 5v5 ranked ladders. Premier gives you one CS Rating across a voted map pool, Competitive gives you a separate skill group on each map you choose, and FACEIT is a third-party platform with levels 1 to 10 and Elo. Play Premier for the main ladder, Competitive to learn maps, and FACEIT for stricter queues.

This guide compares how each ladder ranks you, how placements and resets work, and who each one suits. It is current as of October 2026, during Premier Season 5 and FACEIT Season 9. For the numbers behind each system, see CS2 Premier rating explained and FACEIT levels explained.

What is the difference between Premier, Competitive and FACEIT?

All three are 5v5 ranked modes for Counter-Strike 2, but they measure skill in different ways. The table sums up the key differences.

How does CS2 Premier rank you?

Premier is Valve's headline ranked mode. You earn one CS Rating, shown as a number in a colored band. Bands cover 5,000 points each, from grey under 5,000 to gold at 30,000 and above, per csdb.gg.

  • Placement: your rating appears after 10 wins. Losses and draws do not count toward the ten.
  • Map veto: both teams vote through ban phases, then one team picks its starting side, per the Counter-Strike Wiki. Votes are made by the team, not a captain.
  • Map pool: Season 5 swapped Overpass for Cache, so the pool is Dust II, Inferno, Mirage, Nuke, Ancient, Anubis and Cache, per All Things How.
  • Visibility: if you stop playing, your rating hides after an activity window. The window is about 30 days at low ratings and about eight and a half days at the top, and one win brings it back.

You need CS2 Prime for ranked Premier, and new accounts must earn some XP in other modes first, per this Premier unlock guide.

How do Competitive skill groups work in CS2?

Competitive is the classic mode. You pick which maps to queue for, and the game tracks a separate skill group on each one. Your Mirage rank has no effect on your Nuke rank.

There are 18 skill groups, from Silver I through Silver Elite Master, the Gold Nova tiers, the Master Guardian tiers, Legendary Eagle, Supreme Master First Class and The Global Elite. You unlock a map's skill group after 10 wins on that map, per csdb.gg.

Wingman, the 2v2 mode, has its own separate skill groups that do not affect Premier or Competitive. Our CS2 Wingman ranks explained post covers it.

How does FACEIT rank you?

FACEIT runs its own matchmaking on its own servers. You get an Elo number that places you in one of ten levels. Per the FACEIT support article, Level 1 covers 100 to 500 Elo and Level 10 starts at 2,001 with no upper limit. Challenger marks the top 1,000 players at Level 10.

  • Elo changes: the amount depends on your team's chance of winning, so upsets swing more.
  • Seasons: each season begins with a soft reset and 10 placement matches. Season 9 started August 5, 2026, and its reset weighs recent activity, win rate and FACEIT Rating, per the FACEIT Season 9 article.
  • Requirements: a Steam account with Prime, linked to FACEIT, plus the FACEIT Anti-Cheat client running, per scope.gg.
  • Paid options: free accounts can play standard matchmaking, while paid plans add features such as Super Match.

Which CS2 ranked mode should you play?

There is no single right answer. Each ladder suits a different goal.

Play Premier if you want the main ladder

Premier is the mode most players treat as their real CS2 rank. It has seasons, leaderboards and a single number that is easy to share. It also forces you to learn every Active Duty map, because the veto decides what you play.

Play Competitive if you want to learn maps

Competitive is the best place to practice one map without risking your Premier rating. If you are learning Cache or want to grind your best map, pick it here and track your progress map by map.

Play FACEIT if you want stricter queues

FACEIT suits players who want a required anti-cheat client, party restrictions by level and an extra ladder with its own seasons. It also gives you a second skill measure to compare with your Premier rating.

Do Premier, Competitive and FACEIT ranks convert to each other?

Not officially. Valve and FACEIT do not publish a conversion table. The one link is at the start: FACEIT says new players who meet requirements such as Prime and a minimum number of Premier wins have their starting Elo converted from their latest Premier rating. Everyone else starts at 1,000 Elo.

Inside CS2, Premier and Competitive also stay separate. Your Premier rating does not set your Competitive skill groups. Treat each rank as its own measure, and compare your actual match stats instead. Our CS2 stats explained guide shows which numbers matter most.

Can you play all three CS2 ladders at once?

Yes. Many players use Competitive to warm up on a map, Premier as their main ranked grind and FACEIT for an extra challenge. Splitting time does slow your progress on any single ladder, so set a clear goal first. The rank goal planner can help you choose where to spend your games this season, and our Premier climbing guide covers habits that work on all three.

Frequently asked questions

Is Premier better than Competitive in CS2?

Neither is better; they do different jobs. Premier gives you one CS Rating, seasonal leaderboards and a voted map pool, so it is the mode most players treat as their main rank. Competitive lets you choose your maps and tracks a separate skill group on each one, which makes it ideal for practicing a single map without risking your Premier rating. Many players use both during the same season.

Does Competitive rank affect Premier rating?

No. Competitive skill groups and Premier CS Rating are tracked separately in CS2. Winning on Mirage in Competitive raises only your Mirage skill group, and it does not move your Premier number. Each Competitive map also has its own rank, unlocked after 10 wins on that map. Wingman skill groups are separate again and do not affect either mode.

What FACEIT level equals what Premier rating?

There is no official conversion between FACEIT levels and Premier CS Rating. Valve and FACEIT run separate ladders with different player pools and matchmaking. The only official link is that FACEIT can convert a new player's starting Elo from their most recent Premier rating if they meet requirements like Prime status and a minimum number of Premier wins. Community conversion charts are estimates, so treat them with care.

Do you need Prime to play FACEIT?

Yes. Setup guides such as scope.gg list a Steam account with CS2 Prime status as a requirement for FACEIT. You also need to link that Steam account to FACEIT and keep the FACEIT Anti-Cheat client running while you play. Accounts that FACEIT flags as suspicious may also be asked to verify their identity. Prime is required for ranked Premier inside CS2 as well.

How many wins do you need to get a rank in CS2?

You need 10 wins in each Valve ranked mode. In Premier, your CS Rating appears after 10 wins, and you need 10 more after each season reset. In Competitive, each map's skill group appears after 10 wins on that specific map. FACEIT works differently: every player plays 10 placement matches at the start of each season, and Elo is revealed after the tenth match whether you win or lose.

Which CS2 ranked mode is best for beginners?

Competitive is often the easiest starting point because you pick your maps and can learn one at a time. Once you know a few maps, Premier becomes the natural main ladder, since its veto uses the full Active Duty pool. FACEIT adds a required anti-cheat client and its own levels, and it is a good next step once you want a second ladder. Premier needs Prime, and new accounts must earn some XP first.
