CS2 Premier uses a single number called CS Rating instead of named ranks. You unlock it by winning 10 Premier matches, then each win raises it and each loss lowers it. The number is color-coded in 5,000-point bands, from grey under 5,000 up to gold at 30,000 and above, and resets with every Premier season.
Below: every rating color and range, how points move, placements, seasons and resets, how Premier differs from map-based Competitive skill groups, how leaderboards work, and what you need to queue ranked.
What is CS2 Premier and how is it different from Competitive?
Premier is the headline ranked mode in Counter-Strike 2, the game developed and published by Valve. It plays the current Active Duty map pool, and the map is not chosen before you queue: all ten players vote through a ban phase, and one team picks its starting side. Your result is a single CS Rating that feeds seasonal leaderboards.
Competitive is the classic mode. You choose which maps to queue for, and you earn a separate skill group on each map, using the familiar Silver I to Global Elite badges. Both modes use a 24-round regulation format, with overtime when the score is tied 12-12.
| Feature | Premier | Competitive |
|---|---|---|
| Rank display | One numeric CS Rating | 18 skill groups, Silver I to Global Elite |
| Scope | One rating across all maps | Separate skill group per map |
| Map selection | Ten-player pick/ban vote from Active Duty | You pick maps before queuing |
| Wins to show rank | 10 wins | 10 wins on that map |
| Leaderboards | Global, regional and friends | No Premier leaderboard placement |
| Season reset | Yes, each Premier season | No Premier-style season reset |
What are the CS2 Premier rating colors and ranges?
CS Rating is shown as a number inside a colored badge. The color tells you roughly where you sit at a glance, and each band covers 5,000 points.
| Color | CS Rating range | Rough meaning |
|---|---|---|
| Grey | 0 to 4,999 | Newer or casual players |
| Light blue | 5,000 to 9,999 | Learning fundamentals |
| Blue | 10,000 to 14,999 | Solid, consistent players |
| Purple | 15,000 to 19,999 | Strong teamwork and aim |
| Pink | 20,000 to 24,999 | High-level players |
| Red | 25,000 to 29,999 | Near the top of regional boards |
| Gold | 30,000 and above | Elite, leaderboard-contending players |
The "rough meaning" column is a general guide, not an official Valve label. Valve does not publish an official rank distribution, so treat any percentage you see online as a community estimate. Our rank distribution page explains how to read those numbers with care.
How do you get a CS Rating in Premier?
A new or reset Premier profile shows no rating until you win 10 Premier matches. Only wins count toward that total; losses and ties do not move the counter, though they still feed the hidden rating the game uses to match you. When the tenth win lands, your starting CS Rating appears.
Your starting number depends on how those matches went and on the strength of the opponents you faced. Beating higher-rated lobbies during placement tends to land you higher than winning against weaker ones.
How is CS Rating won and lost?
After placement, every Premier result moves your number. A win adds points and a loss removes them. The game shows how many points are on the line for a win or a loss during the team introductions and again at the halftime switch, so you know the stakes before the round count matters.
The amount is not fixed. Valve has not published the exact formula, but the size of the swing reflects how likely your team was to win:
- Beating a higher-rated team usually pays more than beating a lower-rated one.
- Losing to a team the system expected you to beat usually costs more.
- A tie can nudge your rating up, down, or leave it unchanged, depending on whether you were the favorite.
If you are planning a target number for the season, the rank goal planner can help you set realistic milestones without guessing at hidden math.
Does CS Rating decay if you stop playing?
Your rating does not slowly drain, but it can go hidden. Each rating has an activity window that gets shorter as the number gets higher: roughly 30 days at the low end and a little over a week at the very top. If the window runs out, your rating is hidden and you drop off the leaderboard. Winning one Premier match brings it back, and it may shift up or down when it returns. You can check your window by hovering the info icon next to season progress in the Premier menu.
How do CS2 Premier seasons and resets work?
Premier runs in seasons; since Season 2 they have lasted roughly five to six months each. Each new season clears the visible rating for everyone, restarts the leaderboards, and requires 10 wins again to reveal a fresh CS Rating. Valve has said ratings are recalibrated from your previous performance, so returning players are not dropped to zero in the hidden system.
Season 5 arrived with the July 8, 2026 update, which landed on July 9 in parts of Europe and Asia. That update swapped Overpass out of the Active Duty pool and brought Cache back, so the Premier veto now runs Dust II, Mirage, Inferno, Nuke, Ancient, Anubis and Cache. Valve had not announced an end date at the time of writing, and both the map pool and season rules may change.
Do you get a reward at the end of a season?
Yes. Valve hands out a Premier season medal based on your final rating. Since Season 2, you need an active rating and at least 25 Premier wins during the season to qualify, so a handful of placement games alone is not enough.
How do Competitive skill groups work in CS2?
Competitive keeps the 18 skill groups from CS:GO, ranked in this order:
- Silver I, Silver II, Silver III, Silver IV, Silver Elite, Silver Elite Master
- Gold Nova I, Gold Nova II, Gold Nova III, Gold Nova Master
- Master Guardian I, Master Guardian II, Master Guardian Elite, Distinguished Master Guardian
- Legendary Eagle, Legendary Eagle Master, Supreme Master First Class, The Global Elite
The big change in CS2 is that each map has its own skill group. You could be Legendary Eagle on Mirage and Gold Nova on Nuke, which reflects real differences in map knowledge. A map's skill group appears after you win 10 matches on it. Wingman, the 2v2 mode, also has its own separate skill groups.
Competitive is a good place to learn a map with lower stakes. Premier is where your all-around level is measured, because you cannot avoid weaker maps in the veto forever.
How do CS2 Premier leaderboards work?
Every active CS Rating feeds seasonal leaderboards. You can view them globally, by region such as Europe or North America, or filtered to your Steam friends. The friends view is often the most useful day to day, because it compares you with players you actually queue with.
Leaderboard spots only count while your rating is active, so an expired activity window removes you until you win again. When a season ends the boards restart. You can follow top players and regional standings from our leaderboards hub.
What do you need to play ranked Premier in CS2?
Counter-Strike 2 is free to play, but ranked Premier needs Prime Status. Prime is a one-time Steam purchase, listed at $14.99 in the US, and accounts that had Prime in CS:GO keep it. Brand-new accounts must also earn some starting XP in modes like Deathmatch or Casual before ranked queues unlock.
- Prime Status on your Steam account
- Enough starting XP to unlock ranked play
- Queue Premier solo or in a lobby of up to five
- Win 10 matches to reveal your rating
Non-Prime accounts are matched in a separate pool and do not earn a CS Rating or leaderboard spot.
Ready to climb? Now that you know how the ladder works, our guide on how to rank up in CS2 Premier covers the habits, practice routine and weekly checklist that turn it into a climb.
Track your climb. CS2 lookups are live now. Open the CS2 stats hub or the player lookup to see a player's Premier rating, FACEIT level, map ranks and recent matches; the match tracker comes next.

Frequently asked questions
How many wins do you need to get a CS Rating in CS2 Premier?
You need 10 Premier wins to reveal your CS Rating. Losses and ties do not count toward the 10, although they still feed the hidden rating used for matchmaking. When the tenth win lands, your starting rating appears, and it reflects how you performed and how strong your opponents were. The same 10-win requirement applies again at the start of every new Premier season, because visible ratings are cleared and leaderboards restart.
What are the CS2 Premier rating colors?
CS Rating colors change every 5,000 points. Grey covers 0 to 4,999, light blue 5,000 to 9,999, blue 10,000 to 14,999, purple 15,000 to 19,999, pink 20,000 to 24,999, red 25,000 to 29,999, and gold is 30,000 and above. The colors are a quick visual shorthand, not separate ranks, so your exact number is what matters for leaderboards and matchmaking. Valve does not publish official player percentages for each color.
How much CS Rating do you gain or lose per match?
There is no fixed amount. The game shows the points at stake for a win or loss during team introductions and at halftime. Swings are larger when the result is unexpected, so beating a higher-rated team pays more and losing to a lower-rated team costs more. Ties can move your rating slightly in either direction depending on whether you were favored. Valve has not published the exact formula behind these numbers.
Does CS2 Premier rating reset every season?
Yes. When a new Premier season begins, everyone's visible CS Rating is cleared, leaderboards restart, and you must win 10 matches again to reveal a new rating. Valve has said ratings are recalibrated from earlier performance, so returning players are not treated as brand-new in the hidden system. Season 5 started with the July 8, 2026 update, and Valve had not announced its end date at the time of writing.
Is Premier better than Competitive in CS2?
They measure different things. Premier gives one CS Rating across the Active Duty pool, uses a ten-player map veto, and has global, regional and friends leaderboards. Competitive lets you pick maps and gives a separate Silver I to Global Elite skill group on each map after 10 wins there. Many players use Competitive to practice weaker maps, then play Premier to measure their overall level against the season leaderboard.
Do you need Prime to play ranked CS2?
Yes, Prime Status is needed to earn a CS Rating in Premier and appear on leaderboards. Prime is a one-time Steam purchase listed at $14.99 in the US, and accounts that owned Prime in CS:GO keep it. New accounts also need some starting XP from modes like Deathmatch or Casual before ranked unlocks. Non-Prime accounts are matched separately and do not receive a Premier rating or leaderboard placement.
