League of Legends has five roles: Top, Jungle, Mid, Bot (ADC) and Support. Top and Mid are solo lanes, Bot and Support share the bottom lane, and the Jungler farms monsters between lanes while taking objectives. Each role has its own job, typical champion classes and, since 2026, its own role quest reward.
This guide explains what each role does, where it plays, what to focus on early, which champion classes usually fit, and how role selection and autofill work in ranked. It is current as of October 2026, during Season 3 of 2026, and avoids short-lived meta picks. For the ranked ladder itself, see League of Legends ranks explained.
What are the five roles in League of Legends?
The table below summarizes each position as described by the League of Legends Wiki, using Riot's own champion class names.
| Role | Where you play | Main job | Typical classes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Top | Top lane, solo | Win a long 1v1, split push, join fights with Teleport | Fighters, tanks, some mages and marksmen |
| Jungle | Jungle and river | Farm camps, gank lanes, secure epic monsters | Fighters, assassins, tanks, some mages |
| Mid | Middle lane, solo | Control the center, clear waves, roam to side lanes | Mages and assassins |
| Bot (ADC) | Bottom lane, with Support | Farm safely and carry later with sustained damage | Mostly marksmen, some mages and fighters |
| Support | Bottom lane, then the whole map | Protect the carry, control vision, start or stop fights | Enchanters, catchers, tanks and mages |
Riot's class system groups champions as Controllers (Enchanters and Catchers), Fighters (Juggernauts and Divers), Mages (Burst, Battlemage and Artillery), Marksmen, Slayers (Assassins and Skirmishers), Tanks (Vanguards and Wardens) and Specialists, per the wiki's champion classes page. Knowing the class tells you a lot about how a champion wants to play, even before you learn its kit.
What does the Top laner do?
Top is a solo lane in the upper corner of the map, and it is fairly isolated, so Top laners need to be self-sufficient.
- Early priority: farm and trade with the enemy laner, and avoid giving free kills to the enemy jungler.
- Mid game: push side lanes to pull enemies away from objectives.
- Teleport: often used to rejoin fights or help another lane.
- Champion types: Juggernauts, Divers, Wardens and Vanguards are common, with some ranged picks.
What does the Jungler do?
The Jungler does not have a lane. Most of their gold and experience comes from jungle monsters, and they must take Smite plus one of three jungle pet items.
- Early priority: plan a clear path, then gank lanes that are pushed or ready to fight.
- Objectives: Dragons, Voidgrubs, Rift Herald and Baron Nashor are the Jungler's main responsibility.
- Vision and tracking: control river vision and guess where the enemy Jungler is.
- Champion types: Fighters, Assassins and Tanks are common, plus some mages.
Jungle is a decision-heavy role. If you like planning and map awareness more than last-hitting, it can be a good fit.
What does the Mid laner do?
Mid is the shortest lane and sits in the center of the map. That gives the Mid laner fast access to both sides.
- Early priority: clear waves quickly so you can move first.
- Roaming: help the Jungler at river fights or gank a side lane.
- Champion types: Burst Mages, Battlemages and Assassins, especially champions with good wave clear and level scaling.
What do the Bot laner (ADC) and Support do?
Bot lane is a two-player lane. The Bot laner, often called the ADC or marksman, relies on gold and grows stronger later. The Support rarely farms minions and earns gold through the support item, World Atlas, which later upgrades to provide wards.
Bot laner priorities
- Farm: last-hit minions consistently, because your items drive your damage.
- Positioning: stay at the edge of fights and hit what is in range.
- Champion types: mostly Marksmen, with some mages and fighters.
Support priorities
- Lane: protect your carry and look for good trades.
- Vision: ward and clear wards across the map, which the wiki calls the role's main job.
- Champion types: Enchanters that heal and shield, Catchers that lock enemies down, Wardens and Vanguards, and some mages.
What are role quests in 2026?
Patch 26.1 added role quests, which give each position a bonus only that role can earn, per esports.gg. Progress comes from the position you were assigned in champion select. At launch the rewards were:
- Top: bonus experience and a level cap raised to 20, plus a Teleport upgrade.
- Jungle: more movement speed in the jungle and river, and more gold and experience from large monsters.
- Mid: a free upgrade to tier 3 boots and an empowered, faster recall.
- Bot: extra gold and a seventh item slot that holds boots.
- Support: cheaper control wards and a slot that holds them.
Riot can tune these numbers in any patch, so check the patch notes page for current values.
How does role selection and autofill work in ranked?
Before queuing for ranked, you must pick a Primary and Secondary position, or choose Fill, per Riot's matchmaking and autofill article.
- Primary first: matchmaking tries to give you your Primary role, then your Secondary.
- Autofill: if a role is short and queues run long, you may be placed in a role you did not pick.
- Protection: after an autofill, you are guaranteed your Primary or Secondary for the next few games.
- Aegis of Valor: autofilled players can earn double LP on a win, and players in priority roles such as Support and Jungle, or on Fill, have a similar chance.
- Dodging: dodging an autofilled lobby carries your autofill status into the next game.
Riot's Ranked 2026 dev post also explained that autofilled players are matched against other autofilled players in the same role when possible. Riot suggests learning at least one champion for every position, so an autofill does not ruin your game.
Which League of Legends role should you main?
- You like 1v1 duels: try Top.
- You like planning and map control: try Jungle.
- You like high impact and roaming: try Mid.
- You like farming and late-game carrying: try Bot.
- You like helping and reading fights: try Support.

Frequently asked questions
What are the five roles in League of Legends?
The five roles are Top, Jungle, Mid, Bot and Support. Top and Mid are solo lanes. Bot and Support share the bottom lane, where the Bot laner, usually a marksman, farms to carry later and the Support protects them and controls vision. The Jungler has no lane and earns gold and experience from jungle monsters while ganking lanes and taking objectives such as Dragons and Baron Nashor.
What is the easiest role in League of Legends?
There is no official easiest role, but many new players start with Support or Bot because they share a lane and can learn from a partner. Support needs less last-hitting, while Bot teaches farming and positioning. Jungle is often seen as harder for beginners because it relies on map awareness and objective timing. The best starting role is usually the one whose job you enjoy most.
What does ADC mean in League of Legends?
ADC stands for Attack Damage Carry. It is the common nickname for the Bot lane carry, who plays in the bottom lane alongside a Support. Most ADCs are marksmen: ranged champions that deal steady damage mainly through basic attacks and get much stronger as they buy items. Some mages and fighters also play the bot lane carry position, so many players simply call the role Bot.
How does autofill work in League ranked?
In ranked you choose a Primary and Secondary role, or Fill. Matchmaking tries your Primary first, then your Secondary. If a role is short and queues get long, you can be autofilled into a role you did not pick. After that, you are guaranteed your Primary or Secondary for the next few games, and a win while autofilled can earn double LP through Aegis of Valor.
What are role quests in League of Legends?
Role quests arrived in patch 26.1 and give each position a bonus only that role can earn. At launch, Top could reach level 20 and upgrade Teleport, Jungle gained speed and extra camp rewards, Mid got tier 3 boots and a faster recall, Bot got extra gold and a seventh slot for boots, and Support got cheaper control wards. Riot can tune these in later patches.
