Overwatch competitive ranks run from Bronze to Champion across nine skill tiers: Bronze, Silver, Gold, Platinum, Emerald, Diamond, Master, Grandmaster and Champion. Each tier has five divisions, from 5 (lowest) to 1 (highest). Above them sits the Top 500 Challenger leaderboard. New accounts unlock Competitive after 20 unranked wins.
Below you will find every tier in order, how rank progress works after each match, when ranks reset, how Role Queue and Open Queue differ, the wide group rules for parties, how Top 500 Challenger works, and what Competitive Points buy. A quick naming note: Blizzard Entertainment dropped the "2" in February 2026, so the game is now officially just Overwatch, though most players still search for Overwatch 2.
What are all the Overwatch ranks in order?
There are nine skill tiers. Emerald is the newest, added between Platinum and Diamond in Season 4 of 2026 (Season 4 patch notes). Blizzard said most players sit in Gold and Platinum, so a tier near the middle of the curve gives more players a meaningful goal.
| Order | Skill tier | Divisions | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Bronze | 5 to 1 | Starting tier for the lowest ratings |
| 2 | Silver | 5 to 1 | Second tier, just above Bronze |
| 3 | Gold | 5 to 1 | One of the two most populated tiers |
| 4 | Platinum | 5 to 1 | The other heavily populated tier |
| 5 | Emerald | 5 to 1 | Added in 2026 Season 4; has its own titles and weapon charms |
| 6 | Diamond | 5 to 1 | Last tier where wide groups use the five-division rule |
| 7 | Master | 5 to 1 | Group spread tightens to three divisions |
| 8 | Grandmaster | 5 to 1 | Any group with a Grandmaster counts as wide |
| 9 | Champion | 5 to 1 | Added in Season 9 (2024); top divisions made more exclusive in 2026 |
| Leaderboard | Top 500 Challenger | None | Ranked by placement on regional leaderboards, not divisions |
That works out to 45 divisions from Bronze 5 to Champion 1. When you finish Division 1 of a tier and keep winning, you move to Division 5 of the next tier. To learn how rank percentiles work, see the rank distribution page.
How do you unlock Competitive in Overwatch?
A new account needs 20 wins in unranked modes before Competitive opens. Blizzard lowered this from 50 wins with the Season 18 update in August 2025 (esports.gg report).
- Quick Play wins count, and so do unranked Stadium wins.
- The requirement applies once per account, not per season.
- Your hidden matchmaking rating starts forming during these games, which is why placements can feel accurate on day one.
How do rank updates and progress percentage work?
Since Season 9 (February 2024), your rank updates after every match instead of every few games (Blizzard). The Competitive Overview screen shows a progress bar toward the next division, and that bar moves up after wins and down after losses.
Under the bar you see rank modifiers that explain why a match moved you more or less than usual. Examples include:
- Calibration: bigger swings when the system is less certain about your rank, such as a long win streak.
- Uphill Battle / Consolation: extra gain for beating a favored team, or a smaller loss when you were the underdog.
- Demotion Protection: a buffer before you drop a division.
- Wide: reduced progress when you queue in a wide group.
- Leaver Compensation: less lost when a teammate leaves.
Since Season 4 of 2026, the overview also includes a Rank Distribution Indicator that shows how your rank compares to all players in that queue. If you want a target for the season, the rank goal planner helps break a climb into steps.
Do ranks reset between seasons, and how many placement games are there?
Ranks no longer reset every season. In 2026, Blizzard ties full rank resets to its three-season arcs (Season 1 patch notes). At the start of 2026 Season 1 (February 10), every Role Queue and Open Queue rank went back to Unranked, Hero Skill Ratings got a soft reset, and players had to finish 10 placement matches per role.
Placements show a predicted rank after each match, and your results weigh heavily on where you start. In seasons without a reset, your rank simply carries over. Reset timing is a 2026 policy and may change, so check the patch notes at the start of each season.
What is the difference between Role Queue and Open Queue ranks?
Role Queue locks each team into one tank, two damage and two support players. You get a separate rank for each role you play, so you can be Diamond on support and Gold on tank at the same time.
Open Queue lets anyone pick any hero, and you get one rank for that queue. It does not feed into your Role Queue ranks. Stadium, the round-based mode, has its own ranked ladder and leagues and is also tracked separately.
Which rank shows on my profile?
Your career profile lists each Role Queue rank and your Open Queue rank on their own. Season rewards generally key off the highest rank you reach in any of them, not the rank you end on.
What are wide groups and party restrictions?
You can group with almost anyone, but parties with a big rank spread are labeled "wide." Blizzard set these rules in Season 10 (Defense Matrix update):
- Diamond and below: a group becomes wide if its highest and lowest players are more than five skill divisions apart.
- Master: wide if more than three divisions apart.
- Grandmaster or Champion: any group containing one of these players is always wide.
Wide groups only face other wide groups, so queue times are longer. Solo players never get matched with them, which is why a four-player wide group cannot queue. Wide matches also give smaller rank changes. Narrow groups follow normal matchmaking.
How does Top 500 Challenger work?
Top 500 is now called Top 500 Challenger. It is a set of leaderboards split by region and role, with a combined board, an Open Queue board and Stadium boards (Blizzard). You earn Challenger Score from Competitive wins at higher ranks, and losses take some of it away.
The 2026 rules, per the Season 1 notes and the October 6 patch:
- You must complete a lifetime competitive challenge (Adept Competitor in 2026) to qualify.
- To appear, you need 1,500 Challenger Score on a single-role board, or 2,000 on the combined or Open Queue boards.
- Score payouts scale with your own rank. For example, a Master 5 win was worth 20 and a Champion 1 win 700 at the start of 2026. Season 4 then raised the score each top division requires.
- A loss costs 40% of what a win at your rank pays.
- Since October 6, 2026, the board sorts by actual rank by default, and the weekly Heat Bonus is gone. Challenger Score still decides who is eligible (patch notes).
Top 500 placers earn a player icon, with a new icon for each three-season arc. Read how top ladders work in each game on our leaderboards page.
What are Competitive Points and ranked rewards?
Competitive Points are the currency for golden-style weapon variants. You earn 10 for a win and 5 for a draw, and a weapon variant costs 3,000. The current yearly variant is Crimson Wolf, which replaced Galactic in 2026. At the start of each competitive year, unspent points convert to Legacy Points, which buy older variants such as Gold, Jade and Galactic.
Rank-based rewards change by arc. In 2026 Seasons 1 to 3, reaching Diamond in either queue unlocked a Crimson Wolf Doomfist skin. Limited events such as Team Drives also pay out Competitive Points and cosmetics. For picks by role, see Role Queue vs Open Queue and the wider guides library.
Ready to climb? Now that you know how the ladder works, our guide on how to rank up in Overwatch covers the habits, practice routine and weekly checklist that turn it into a climb.
Track your climb. RankSurge covers Overwatch with guides only, because Blizzard has no official public stats API. Check your ranks in the in-game career profile, compare tracker options in Overwatch stats sites compared, bookmark the Overwatch stats hub, or use the player lookup for the six live games.
Frequently asked questions
How many ranks are in Overwatch?
Overwatch has nine skill tiers: Bronze, Silver, Gold, Platinum, Emerald, Diamond, Master, Grandmaster and Champion. Each tier has five divisions, numbered 5 (lowest) to 1 (highest), for 45 divisions in total. Above the tiers sits the Top 500 Challenger leaderboard, which ranks the best players in each region by placement instead of divisions. Emerald is the newest tier, added between Platinum and Diamond in Season 4 of 2026.
How many wins do you need to unlock Competitive in Overwatch?
You need 20 wins in unranked modes on a new account. Blizzard lowered the requirement from 50 wins with the Season 18 update in August 2025. Quick Play and unranked Stadium wins both count toward it. It is a one-time requirement per account, so you do not have to unlock Competitive again each season, and the games you play before unlocking help the matchmaker estimate your skill.
How many placement matches are there in Overwatch?
There are 10 placement matches per role whenever ranks are reset or you rank a role for the first time. After each placement game you see a predicted rank, and your results strongly influence your starting division. In 2026 Blizzard resets ranks at the start of each three-season arc, so placements are not required every season. When there is no reset, your rank simply carries over from the previous season.
Do Overwatch ranks reset every season?
No. Ranks carry over between most seasons. In 2026 Blizzard ties full rank resets to its three-season arcs, and the Season 1 reset in February 2026 sent every Role Queue and Open Queue rank back to Unranked with a soft reset to Hero Skill Ratings. After a reset you replay 10 placement matches per role. Reset timing is a policy that can change, so check the patch notes when each new season starts.
What is a wide group in Overwatch Competitive?
A wide group is a party whose highest and lowest ranked players are too far apart. For Diamond and below, that means more than five skill divisions apart. For Master, it is more than three divisions. Any group with a Grandmaster or Champion player is always wide. Wide groups only match against other wide groups, wait longer in queue, and earn smaller rank changes. Solo players are never placed with them.
How do you get into Top 500 Challenger in Overwatch?
Complete the required lifetime competitive challenge, then earn Challenger Score by winning Competitive matches at high ranks. In 2026 you need 1,500 score for a single-role board or 2,000 for the combined or Open Queue boards. Wins pay more at higher ranks, and a loss costs 40 percent of a win. Since October 6, 2026, the board sorts by actual rank, while Challenger Score decides who is eligible.
