Role Queue locks each team into a 5v5 lineup of one tank, two damage and two support players, and gives you a separate rank for every role. Open Queue in 2026 is 6v6 with no role locks, and it has one rank of its own. Pick Role Queue to master a role and Open Queue if you like to flex.
This guide explains how the two Competitive queues differ, how ranks are tracked in each, which roles and heroes fit each format, and what Blizzard has tested for the future. It is current as of October 2026, during Reign of Talon Season 5. For the full tier ladder, read our Overwatch ranks explained guide.
What is the difference between Role Queue and Open Queue in Overwatch?
The main difference is team format. Role Queue is the 5v5 mode most players know: you choose tank, damage or support before you queue, and the matchmaker builds teams in a 1-2-2 shape. Open Queue lets every player pick any hero at any time, and in 2026 it is played 6v6.
Blizzard's own player-data breakdown lists the modes as "Role Queue 5v5" and "Open Queue 6v6," in both ranked and unranked versions, per Blizzard's Director's Take. That same post says Open Queue "can have matches with zero Tanks, four Damage Heroes, or even six Damage dealers." In other words, there is no role limit to save you from a lopsided lineup.
Is Role Queue still 5v5 with one tank?
Yes. Ranked Role Queue is still 5v5 with one tank, two damage and two supports. Blizzard tested 6v6 versions of Role Queue in Quick Play: Hacked events during 2026, but those were limited-time experiments, not a change to Competitive.
How do Role Queue and Open Queue compare side by side?
| Feature | Role Queue | Open Queue |
|---|---|---|
| Team size (Oct 2026) | 5v5 | 6v6 |
| Team shape | 1 tank, 2 damage, 2 support (locked) | Any mix of heroes |
| Hero swaps | Only within your queued role | Any hero, any role, mid-match |
| Ranks tracked | One rank per role (tank, damage, support) | One Open Queue rank |
| Placements after a reset | 10 matches per role | 10 matches |
| Ranked share of daily players* | About 37% | About 8% |
| Best for | Learning one role deeply | Flex players and coordinated groups |
*Blizzard published these shares in its 2026 Future Formats post. Unranked Role Queue was the most played mode overall at about 54% of daily players, with unranked Open Queue at about 19%.
How are ranks tracked per role vs one Open Queue rank?
In Role Queue you earn a separate rank for tank, damage and support. Each role has its own placements and its own progress bar, so you can be Diamond on support and Gold on tank at the same time. Open Queue gives you a single rank for that queue, and it does not affect your Role Queue ranks.
When Blizzard resets Competitive, every rank goes back to Unranked. At the start of 2026, all Role Queue and Open Queue ranks were reset, and players had to finish 10 placement matches for each role, per the Season 1 patch notes. Hero Skill Ratings also got a soft reset.
- Role Queue: three ranks, one per role, each with its own placements.
- Open Queue: one rank, no matter which heroes you play.
- Stadium: a separate ranked ladder that does not feed into either queue.
If you want a target for the season, set one per role with our rank goal planner.
Do roles play differently in Role Queue?
Yes. Some balance rules only apply to Role Queue. In 2026 Season 1, Blizzard gave tanks 150 extra base health in Role Queue modes and cut tank ultimate charge from healing and damage by 40%, per the same Season 1 notes. The damage and support role passives were removed, and their key effects became baseline.
Blizzard also added sub-roles in 2026. Tanks are split into Initiator, Bruiser and Stalwart. Damage heroes are Specialist, Recon, Flanker or Sharpshooter. Supports are Tactician, Medic or Survivor. These labels help you see what a hero is meant to do inside its role.
Hero roles can change, too. The Season 5 patch on October 6, 2026 moved Sombra from Damage to Support, per the official patch notes. If you queue Role Queue, check that your favorite hero is still in the role you expect.
Which queue should you play?
Pick the queue that matches how you like to play. Here is a simple guide:
- You main one role: play Role Queue. Your rank reflects that role only, and every match has a fair 1-2-2 shape.
- You enjoy tanking: Role Queue gives you the solo tank spot, plus the extra Role Queue health. Open Queue lets you pair with a second tank.
- You flex constantly: Open Queue rewards counter-swapping and lets you change role mid-fight.
- You play in a full group: Open Queue lets a group plan unusual comps, such as double tank or triple support.
- You want short, predictable games: Role Queue has a much bigger ranked player base, so match quality tends to be more consistent.

Is 6v6 coming to Role Queue?
Not in Competitive yet. In summer 2026, Blizzard ran two 6v6 experiments in Quick Play: Hacked. Flex Queue (July 16 to 19) used a 1-3-2 format where one damage player at a time could swap to tank. Dynamic Queue (July 30 to August 2) aimed for 2-2-2 games and fell back to the 1-3-2 format when tank queues ran short, per Blizzard and PCGamesN.
Blizzard said these tests would not automatically change the main format. Results might shape existing modes or new Arcade modes instead. Its data showed 5v5 still had the majority of players, while 6v6 kept growing.
How did Open Queue become 6v6?
6v6 returned as limited tests in 2024 and 2025. In Season 16 (April 2025), Blizzard kept 6v6 Open Queue in both Quick Play and Competitive "for the time being," per esports.gg. By 2026, Blizzard's own breakdown listed Open Queue as a 6v6 mode in both ranked and unranked play.
What should you watch for each season?
- Rank resets: Blizzard has tied full resets to its three-season arcs in 2026. Check patch notes when a new arc starts.
- Role changes: heroes can move roles, as Sombra did in Season 5.
- Mode tweaks: limited events change rules. In Season 5, the Halloween Mystery Madness mode was 5v5 Open Queue with a guaranteed 1-2-2 shape.
- Top 500: since October 6, 2026, Top 500 Challenger boards sort by rank rather than Challenger Score.
We track these updates on our patch notes page and in the 2026 ranked season dates post.

Frequently asked questions
Is Overwatch Role Queue 5v5 or 6v6 in 2026?
Role Queue is 5v5 in 2026, with one tank, two damage and two support players on each team. This applies to both ranked and unranked Role Queue. Blizzard ran 6v6 Role Queue style experiments in Quick Play: Hacked during the summer, called Flex Queue and Dynamic Queue, but these were limited-time tests. Blizzard said the results would not automatically change the main format. Always check the latest patch notes, because Blizzard can change modes between seasons.
Is Open Queue 6v6 in Overwatch?
Yes. In 2026, Blizzard lists Open Queue as a 6v6 mode in both ranked and unranked play. Players can pick any hero and switch roles at any time, so a team might have two tanks, four damage heroes or three supports. 6v6 Open Queue first stayed in Quick Play and Competitive in Season 16 in April 2025, and Blizzard's 2026 player data still shows it as a 6v6 mode. It is much smaller than Role Queue, with about 8% of daily players in ranked Open Queue.
Do Role Queue and Open Queue share the same rank?
No. Role Queue gives you a separate rank for tank, damage and support, and each role has its own placements. Open Queue has one rank of its own. Winning in Open Queue does not raise your Role Queue ranks, and the reverse is also true. Stadium has a separate ranked ladder too. This means you can be a high rank on one role, lower on another, and somewhere else again in Open Queue, all in the same season.
How many placement matches do you need in Role Queue?
You need 10 placement matches for each role whenever ranks are reset or you rank a role for the first time. At the start of 2026, Blizzard reset every Role Queue and Open Queue rank to Unranked, so players had to finish 10 placements per role again. If you play all three roles, that is 30 placement games in Role Queue. In seasons without a reset, your ranks simply carry over, so you can keep climbing without new placements.
Which queue is better for climbing in Overwatch?
Role Queue is better for most solo players who want a steady climb. Every match has the same 1-2-2 shape, so you can focus on one role and track progress clearly. It also has a much larger ranked player base, about 37% of daily players versus about 8% for ranked Open Queue, per Blizzard. Open Queue suits flexible players and coordinated groups who can swap heroes to counter the enemy, but random teams can end up with unbalanced lineups.
Why did Sombra move to Support?
Blizzard moved Sombra from the Damage role to the Support role in the Reign of Talon Season 5 patch on October 6, 2026. The official patch notes list the move as part of that season's hero updates. In Role Queue, this means you now queue as Support to play Sombra. In Open Queue, she can still be picked by anyone. Role changes like this can affect which heroes fit your role pool, so check patch notes each season.
