Team Fortress 2 keeps detailed stats for every class on your Steam account. RankSurge reads them for free through the official Steam Web API: paste your Steam profile link or SteamID64 to see your hours and, for each class, playtime, kills, damage, points, dominations and captures, with your record bests. Your Steam profile and Game details must be set to public.

What TF2 stats does Steam record?

Team Fortress 2 was "the first of Valve's multiplayer games to provide detailed statistics for individual players", according to Wikipedia, including records such as most points in a single life. Stats are kept per class, so your Medic and your Soldier each have their own numbers.

Stat What it counts How to read it
Hours Total TF2 playtime on record with Steam The sample size behind everything else
Class playtime Time spent as each of the nine classes Shows which classes you actually play
Kills Kills made while playing that class Fighting output for the class
Damage Damage dealt as that class Useful for classes that soften targets for others
Points Scoreboard points earned as that class Covers objective and team play, not only kills
Dominations Times you dominated an opponent A sign of repeated wins over one player
Captures Control point or intelligence captures How much you play the objective
Record bests Your highest recorded value for a class Your best single performance, not an average

A domination means killing, or helping to kill, the same player four times without them killing you, per StrategyWiki. For a fuller breakdown, read TF2 Stats Explained, and see Stats Explained for how RankSurge handles ratios across games.

How do you make your Steam game details public?

Steam hides game stats unless you allow them. Follow these steps once and the lookup will work from then on.

  1. Open your Steam profile: in the Steam app or on the Steam website, click your profile name and choose Profile.
  2. Click Edit Profile: the button sits on the right side of your profile page.
  3. Open Privacy Settings: this is where Steam keeps every visibility option.
  4. Set My profile to Public: Steam only shares profile data with outside sites when it is public.
  5. Set Game details to Public: this is the setting that controls your games, achievements and playtime.
  6. Check the playtime box: if "Always keep my total playtime private even if users can see my game details" is ticked, untick it so your hours can show.

Valve added the separate Game details setting in April 2018 and describes it as covering the games on your account "along with achievements and playtime", as reported by TheSixthAxis. Steam's own help page on Steam profile privacy has the current wording. Valve's Steam Web API documentation notes that private and friends-only settings are not supported for anyone except the account owner, so a lookup from outside only works on Public.

How does Steam record TF2 stats?

Each Steam game can store named stats for every player. The Steam Web API call that RankSurge uses, GetUserStatsForGame, "gets the list of stats that the specified user has set in an app", per the Steamworks documentation. Valve decides which stats TF2 saves. Your total hours come from Steam itself, which counts playtime in minutes "on record" since early 2009, per Valve's Steam Web API page.

That design has limits you should know about:

  • Lifetime totals only: Steam keeps running totals and record bests. There is no match history and no list of past games.
  • No mode or server split: TF2 has many modes, from Payload to King of the Hill, but the stats are per class, not per mode or server.
  • Records are single bests: a record shows one high point. It says nothing about how often you reach it.
  • Hidden hours: if you tick the box that keeps total playtime private, your hours stay hidden even when game details are public.

What does the RankSurge TF2 lookup show?

Hours

Total TF2 hours as recorded by Steam.

Class playtime

Time played on each of the nine classes, so you can see your main.

Class totals

Kills, damage, points, dominations and captures for each class.

Record bests

Your best recorded values for each class.

The lookup is free and reads only what Steam makes public. You never sign in or share a password, and RankSurge cannot change anything on your account.

How can you use your TF2 stats?

Valve does not publish a benchmark for good TF2 numbers, and classes are built for different jobs. A Medic will rarely top a Soldier for kills, and that is expected. These checks work better than chasing a target:

  • Compare a class with itself: divide kills, damage or points by hours on that class to get a per hour figure, then check again after more games.
  • Look at points, not just kills: points include objective play, so a class with modest kills can still carry high points.
  • Check captures: low captures across your classes can mean you fight away from the point or cart.
  • Use records as a ceiling: your record bests show what you can do on a good life. Aim to get closer to them more often.

Why can't RankSurge find my TF2 stats?

  • Private settings: both My profile and Game details must be Public. Friends Only is not enough.
  • Wrong link: paste your full profile link, or your 17 digit SteamID64 if you have a custom profile address.
  • No stats yet: a class you have never played will show no numbers.
  • Settings not saved: after changing privacy, make sure the new setting shows as Public, then search again.

Frequently asked questions

How do I check my TF2 stats?

Paste your Steam profile link or your SteamID64 into the Team Fortress 2 lookup on RankSurge. It reads the lifetime stats Steam records for TF2 through the official Steam Web API and shows your total hours plus, for each class, playtime, kills, damage, points, dominations and captures, with your record bests. The lookup is free. Your Steam profile and Game details both need to be set to Public in your Steam privacy settings.

How do I make my TF2 stats public?

Open your Steam profile, click Edit Profile, then open Privacy Settings. Set My profile to Public and Game details to Public. If the box that keeps your total playtime private is ticked, untick it so your hours show too. Friends Only is not enough, because Steam only shares game stats with outside sites when they are Public. After you save, search again on RankSurge.

What is a domination in TF2?

You dominate a player when you kill them, or help kill them, four times without them killing you in between. The game then marks them as dominated, and if they kill you back they get revenge. Steam keeps a count of your dominations for each class, and RankSurge shows that count alongside kills, damage, points and captures. A high domination count suggests you win repeated fights against the same opponents.

Why does my Medic have low kills on RankSurge?

Medic is a support class built around healing teammates and building ÜberCharge, so low kills are normal. Compare your Medic with your own Medic numbers over time rather than with a Soldier or Heavy. Points are a better guide for support classes because they include more than kills. RankSurge shows points, kills, damage, dominations and captures per class, so you can judge each class on the job it is built for.

Does RankSurge show my TF2 match history?

No. Steam stores lifetime totals and record bests for each class, not a list of matches, so RankSurge cannot show single games, maps, modes or servers. What you get is your total hours, playtime per class, per class totals and your best recorded values. To track progress, note your numbers now and compare them after a few weeks of play, dividing by hours played on each class.

Where does RankSurge get TF2 stats, and is it free?

RankSurge reads Team Fortress 2 stats from the official Steam Web API, the read-only service Valve provides for Steam game data. The lookup is free and you never sign in or share a password, so RankSurge cannot change anything on your account. It only sees what your privacy settings make public. RankSurge is an independent site and is not affiliated with or endorsed by Valve.
