Lichess is a free, open-source chess server that rates every player separately in bullet, blitz, rapid, classical and correspondence chess. RankSurge looks up any Lichess player and shows those ratings, the puzzle rating, win rate, recent games with accuracy and favourite openings, straight from the official Lichess API.

Which ratings does Lichess track?

Lichess sorts each game by its estimated duration: the starting clock time in seconds plus 40 times the increment. Each category has its own Glicko-2 rating, as the Lichess FAQ explains.

Rating Estimated game duration
UltraBullet 29 seconds or less
Bullet 30 seconds to 179 seconds
Blitz 180 seconds to 479 seconds
Rapid 480 seconds to 1,499 seconds
Classical 1,500 seconds or more
Correspondence Days per move

For example, 3 minutes with a 2 second increment is 180 plus 80, or 260 seconds, so it counts as blitz. A question mark next to a rating means it is still provisional.

How can you use your stats to win more?

  • Pick one time control: your rating settles fastest when most of your games are in one category.
  • Check your openings: an opening with a low score in your recent games is a good one to study or replace.
  • Review low-accuracy games: request a computer analysis and find the first big mistake.
  • Train tactics daily: your puzzle rating is a quick check on whether training is working.

Keep your accounts together in the Player Hub, compare two players with AI Profile Pick, and browse every game we cover from Player Lookup or the Guide Library.

Ask RankSurge AI about your games. Look up your username above, open your dashboard and ask which time control suits you best.

Frequently asked questions

How do I check my Lichess stats?

Type your Lichess username on this page, or paste the link to your profile from lichess.org/@/. RankSurge reads your bullet, blitz, rapid, classical and correspondence ratings, your games in each, your win, loss and draw record, your puzzle rating and Puzzle Storm score, and your last 20 games from the official Lichess API. There is no sign-up and you never share a password with RankSurge.

How does Lichess decide if a game is blitz or rapid?

Lichess estimates the length of a game as the starting clock time in seconds plus 40 times the increment. A game estimated at 29 seconds or less is UltraBullet, up to 179 seconds is bullet, up to 479 seconds is blitz, up to 1,499 seconds is rapid, and 1,500 seconds or more is classical. So 5 minutes with a 3 second increment is 300 plus 120, or 420 seconds, which is blitz.

What does the question mark after a Lichess rating mean?

It means the rating is provisional. Lichess uses the Glicko-2 rating system, which tracks how certain it is about each rating as a rating deviation. While that deviation is greater than 110, Lichess shows a question mark. New players start at 1500 with a very large deviation, so ratings move quickly at first and then settle as you play more rated games in that time control.

Why is my Lichess rating higher than my Chess.com rating?

Each site has its own player pool and rating system, so the numbers are not directly comparable. Lichess uses Glicko-2 with a starting rating of 1500, and the Lichess FAQ itself advises against comparing its ratings with other organisations. Many players see higher numbers on Lichess for a similar strength. Compare yourself against players on the same site and in the same time control instead.

Why can't RankSurge find my Lichess account?

Check the spelling of your username, or paste your lichess.org/@/ profile link. Closed accounts cannot be looked up, and accounts that Lichess has marked for breaking its terms of service are not shown either. Lichess limits how many requests apps can send, so if the service is busy RankSurge asks you to wait a minute and try again rather than showing incomplete results.

Is the RankSurge Lichess lookup free?

Yes. Looking up players, recent games, openings and your dashboard are free and need no sign-up. Free visitors also get a daily allowance of Ask AI questions and AI Profile Picks, and RankSurge Pro removes those daily limits. Lichess itself is free and supported by donations; RankSurge is a separate site supported by clearly labelled ads and is not affiliated with Lichess.
