Fortnite Ranked has eight ranks: Bronze, Silver, Gold, Platinum, Diamond, Elite, Champion and Unreal. Bronze to Diamond each have three divisions. Placement moves your progress bar the most, eliminations add to it, and an early exit takes it away. Battle Royale and Zero Build share one rank, Reload has its own, and ranks reset each season while your hidden skill rating carries over.
This guide explains each rank, how progress is earned and lost, how resets and party ranks work, and what Unreal and Unreal Legends need. It is current as of Chapter 7 Season 4, which runs until November 1, 2026. Look up your own numbers on the RankSurge Fortnite stats page as you read.
What are the Fortnite ranks in order?
| Rank | Divisions | What to know |
|---|---|---|
| Bronze | I to III | Where most new players start |
| Silver | I to III | Survival starts to matter more than kills |
| Gold | I to III | About a third of tracked players reach Gold I or higher |
| Platinum | I to III | Lobbies rotate and fight for zone more often |
| Diamond | I to III | Roughly the top 16% of tracked players |
| Elite | Single rank | Late game decides most matches |
| Champion | Single rank | Roughly the top 4%; opens Division 1 Cups |
| Unreal | Single rank with a leaderboard | Under 2% of tracked players; no demotion for the rest of the season |
The distribution figures come from more than four million Fortnite Tracker profiles summarised by FRVR, so treat them as a guide rather than an official Epic number. Some guides also list divisions for Elite and Champion; the rank order is the same either way.
How do you unlock Ranked and get placed?
There is no account level requirement. You finish a short Kickstart quest in normal matches, then switch Ranked on in the mode menu, per All Things How. Your first Ranked match places you. Because the hidden skill rating carries over between seasons, returning players are placed near where they finished.
What moves your progress bar?
Each rank below Unreal shows a progress bar in percent. Fortnite Ranked 2.0 weighs balanced play rather than pure aggression, per THESPIKE.GG:
- Placement matters most. Reaching the final circles gives the biggest boost, and a Victory Royale gives the most of all.
- Eliminations add progress, and late-game eliminations or eliminations of higher-ranked players count for more.
- Early exits cost progress. Dying in the first minutes, especially with no eliminations, is the biggest penalty.
- Consistency wins. Steady top-half finishes beat one great game followed by three early deaths.
If your bar empties below Unreal, you drop a division. Once you reach Unreal you cannot be demoted for the rest of that season.
Which modes share a rank?
- Battle Royale and Zero Build share one rank and one progress bar.
- Reload has its own separate ladder that does not change your Battle Royale rank.
- Solo, Duos and Squads all count toward the same rank in each ladder.
How do party ranks work?
In Duos and Squads your team is matched at a party rank equal to its highest-ranked player. Each player keeps their own rank and gains or loses progress from the team's placement and eliminations. Playing with a much higher-ranked friend means tougher lobbies for you.
How do resets, Unreal and Unreal Legends work?
Visible ranks reset at the start of every season, and your hidden skill rating carries over so placement puts you back near your level. Chapter 7 Season 4 ends on November 1, 2026, per GGSeason.
- Unreal gives you a number on the global Unreal leaderboard and the Axe of Unreal cosmetic the first time you reach it each season.
- Unreal Legends needs Unreal rank, a skill rating of at least 2,500 and a top-500 place on the leaderboard at the same time.
- Division 1 Cups open to players who reach Champion or Unreal.
Does RankSurge show your Ranked division?
Not yet. The public data source RankSurge uses covers Battle Royale results such as wins, win rate, K/D, kills and top 10s, but not Ranked divisions. Your division is on the Career tab in Fortnite. You can also join the opt-in RankSurge Fortnite leaderboard and compare yourself with a friend in the head-to-head.

Frequently asked questions
What are the ranks in Fortnite Ranked?
Fortnite Ranked has eight ranks. From lowest to highest they are Bronze, Silver, Gold, Platinum, Diamond, Elite, Champion and Unreal. Bronze to Diamond each have three divisions, I to III. Unreal is the top rank and puts you on a global leaderboard, and the best Unreal players can reach Unreal Legends. The same ranks are used for Battle Royale, Zero Build and Reload, which has its own separate ladder.
Do kills or placement matter more in Fortnite Ranked?
Placement matters more. Reaching the final circles gives the biggest boost to your progress bar, and an early exit costs the most. Eliminations still add progress, especially late in the match or against higher-ranked players. A player who reaches the top 10 often climbs faster than a player who gets many early kills and then dies. Aim for consistent top-half finishes first.
Can you lose rank in Fortnite?
Yes, below Unreal. Poor matches lower your progress bar, and if it empties you drop a division. Once you reach Unreal you cannot be demoted for the rest of that season. Ranks also reset at the start of each season, although the hidden skill rating carries over, so your placement match puts you back near your level.
What do you need for Unreal Legends?
Unreal Legends needs three things at the same time: Unreal rank, a skill rating of at least 2,500 and a place in the top 500 of the Unreal leaderboard. Reaching Unreal alone gives you a leaderboard number and the Axe of Unreal cosmetic for that season, and Champion or Unreal also makes you eligible for Division 1 Cups.
Does RankSurge show my Fortnite rank?
