The Steel Path is Warframe's hard mode. It unlocks once you complete the Star Chart, and it replays every node with enemies 100 levels higher and a 150% bonus to their health, armour and shields. You earn Steel Essence from it and spend it in Teshin's Steel Path Honors shop.
Updated November 7, 2026.
Digital Extremes introduced The Steel Path in Update 28.1, and the core rules in this guide come from the official Update 28.1.0 patch notes. The mode has grown since then, and Digital Extremes has said Warframe: Tau will add its own Steel Path variant in December 2026. For the latest news, see our Warframe hub.
How do you unlock the Steel Path?
You need a completed Star Chart, which is the same requirement as Arbitrations. In practice that means clearing every node and Junction across the Origin System. Once you do, Teshin in any Relay invites you to the mode, and a toggle appears on the Star Chart so you can switch between normal and Steel Path nodes.
- Work through the main quests, since several planets and Junctions are locked behind them.
- Use the Star Chart's planet view to spot nodes you have missed.
- Remember that each Steel Path node you complete grants Mastery again, which our Mastery Rank guide explains.
How much harder is the Steel Path?
| Change | Normal Star Chart | Steel Path |
|---|---|---|
| Enemy level | Base node level | +100 levels |
| Health, armour, shields | Base values | +150% bonus (250% total) |
| Archwing enemies | Base node level | +50 levels, no stat bonus |
| Main currency | None | Steel Essence |
| Mastery | Once per node | Once per node again |
The jump is big, so arrive with a few builds that can deal reliable damage and survive. Unmodded gear will not keep up.
What should you have ready before starting?
- At least one strong weapon with Forma and a fully ranked damage mod set.
- A survivable Warframe, ideally one with damage reduction, healing or crowd control.
- Arcanes that boost damage or survivability, where you can afford them.
- Helminth and Archon Shards if you have unlocked them, since both help a lot at this level.
- A squad, at least at first. Public matchmaking works fine for most nodes.
How do you earn Steel Essence?
Steel Essence is the Steel Path's dedicated currency. Main sources include:
- Acolytes, which hunt you during Steel Path missions and drop Steel Essence when defeated.
- Eximus enemies, which have a chance to drop it.
- Region completion: Teshin gives Steel Essence plus a decoration and emote for each region you clear.
- Daily Steel Path Incursions, a rotating set of Steel Path alerts that reward Steel Essence.
What can you buy in Steel Path Honors?
Teshin's Steel Path Honors shop sells rewards for Steel Essence, including:
- Umbra Forma and Kuva bundles.
- Random Relic packs.
- Stance Forma blueprints.
- Arcane Adapters and cosmetics such as the Bishamo armour set.
The stock changes over time, and some items rotate weekly, so check the shop each reset.
Which missions are best to start with?
- Short exterminate and capture nodes are good for learning enemy damage.
- Survival and defence are good for Acolyte spawns once your builds hold up.
- Low base-level planets such as Earth and Venus are easier than late-game nodes, even with the +100 levels.
Avoid long missions on high-level planets until your gear is ready, and use the Incursions as daily checklist goals.
What other Steel Path activities are there?
The mode reaches beyond the Origin System Star Chart. One activity in particular is worth knowing about once you are settled in:
- The Steel Path Circuit in Duviri, a harder version of the Circuit run with your own gear. It offers a weekly selection of Incarnon Genesis adapters, which turn older weapons into much stronger Incarnon forms.
It is optional, but the Circuit is one of the best long-term upgrades for weapons you already like, because an Incarnon form can lift an old favourite to Steel Path strength. Pick the adapter for a weapon you enjoy using, not just the one that is popular this week, since you will be running it for a long time.
How does the Steel Path tie into current updates?
Recent content keeps building on it. The Icebind mode added in Update 44.1 pits squads against level 999+ enemies, and Digital Extremes has confirmed a Tau Steel Path variant featuring Hunra's underlings instead of Acolytes. For the full list of current changes, read our Iceblade of Narin update and Tau roadmap guide.
Starter rule: finish the Star Chart, polish two or three builds, then farm Incursions daily for steady Steel Essence. RankSurge is independent and is not affiliated with Digital Extremes.
Frequently asked questions
How do you unlock the Steel Path in Warframe?
You unlock the Steel Path by completing the Star Chart, which is the same requirement as Arbitrations. That means clearing every node and Junction in the Origin System, which in turn requires finishing several main quests. Once you meet the requirement, Teshin invites you to the mode, and a toggle on the Star Chart lets you switch between normal and Steel Path versions of each node.
How much harder is the Steel Path?
On the Steel Path, enemies are 100 levels higher than on the normal Star Chart and receive a 150% bonus to health, armour and shields, which is 250% of their usual values. Archwing missions are the exception, with a 50 level increase and no stat bonus. The jump is significant, so you will want several well-modded weapons and a survivable Warframe.
How do you farm Steel Essence in Warframe?
Steel Essence comes from Acolytes that hunt you during Steel Path missions, from Eximus enemies that have a chance to drop it, from Teshin's rewards for clearing each region, and from the daily Steel Path Incursions. Incursions are the most reliable steady source, while longer Survival and Defense missions give more Acolyte spawns once your builds can handle the extra difficulty.
What should you buy with Steel Essence?
Teshin's Steel Path Honors shop sells Umbra Forma, Kuva bundles, Random Relic packs, Stance Forma blueprints, Arcane Adapters and cosmetics such as the Bishamo armour set. Some of the stock rotates over time, so check the shop at each reset. Umbra Forma and Arcane Adapters are popular choices because they are hard to obtain elsewhere and help your strongest builds.
Does the Steel Path give Mastery points?
Yes. Each Steel Path node grants Mastery points the first time you complete it, separately from the normal Star Chart version of that node. That means clearing the whole Steel Path gives a second full set of node Mastery, which is a useful boost for players working toward higher Mastery Ranks or Legendary Ranks after they have levelled most of their gear.
