Mastery Rank (MR) is Warframe's account level. You earn Mastery points by ranking up new gear and finishing Star Chart nodes for the first time, then pass a short test to reach each of the 30 ranks from Initiate to True Master. Higher MR unlocks weapons, trading, more daily Syndicate Standing and, after MR 30, Legendary Ranks.

Warframe is Digital Extremes' free-to-play co-op action game, available on PC, PlayStation, Xbox, Nintendo Switch, Switch 2, iOS and Android. The rules below follow the official Warframe Mastery Ranks guide. For current updates and every other guide, visit our Warframe hub.
What is Mastery Rank in Warframe?
Mastery Rank is a single number that reflects how much of the game you have played and how much gear you have levelled. It is shown next to your name and is used across the game to gate weapons, trading and some activities. It does not make your Warframe stronger by itself, but it opens doors that do.
How do you earn Mastery points?
Mastery points come from levelling items you have not mastered before and from completing content. The key sources are:
| Source | Mastery per rank | Total when maxed |
|---|---|---|
| Weapon to rank 30 | 100 | 3,000 |
| Warframe to rank 30 | 200 | 6,000 |
| Companion or Archwing to rank 30 | 200 | 6,000 |
| Rank 40 weapons (such as Kuva and Tenet weapons) | 100 | 4,000 |
| Star Chart node, first completion | Varies | Once per node |
| Steel Path node, first completion | Varies | Once per node |
A few other things also add Mastery, including Junctions, Railjack Intrinsics, K-Drives and Necramechs. Modular items such as Zaws, Kitguns and MOA companions must be gilded before their levels count. Points are permanent: once an item is mastered, you can sell it and keep the Mastery.
How many Mastery points does each rank need?
The total required for a rank is 2,500 multiplied by the rank squared. That means early ranks come quickly and later ones take much longer.
- MR 1: 2,500 points.
- MR 5: 62,500 points.
- MR 10: 250,000 points.
- MR 20: 1,000,000 points.
- MR 30: 2,250,000 points.
Points keep accumulating while you wait to take a test, so nothing is wasted if you level gear before you are ready.
How do Mastery Rank tests work?
Once you have enough points, open the pause menu and choose the Mastery Rank Up option. Each rank has a short challenge, such as an obstacle course, a combat test or a stealth task. If you fail, you have to wait 24 hours before trying again, so it is worth practising first. You can try tests for free in Cephalon Simaris' Sanctuary in any Relay.
- Bring a fast Warframe and a reliable weapon for combat tests.
- Read the objective carefully before you start, since some tests fail you for being seen.
- Look up the test layout in advance for the trickier ranks.
What does each Mastery Rank unlock?
- Weapons: many weapons require a minimum MR to equip.
- Trading: unlocks at MR 2, and the number of trades you can make per day equals your MR.
- Syndicate Standing: your daily cap is 16,000 plus 500 for each Mastery Rank.
- Caps: higher ranks raise your Void Trace and daily Focus limits.
- True Master (MR 30): Umbra Forma, extra Loadout and Riven slots, emotes and the True Master's Font, which lets you grant a three-hour boost to everyone in your Relay once per day.
What are Legendary Ranks?
After MR 30, further Mastery goes toward Legendary Ranks, each needing another 147,500 points. Every Legendary Rank grants a Legendary Core, which instantly maxes a mod. New items arrive with each update, including the 66th Warframe Narin in Iceblade of Narin, so long-term players always have something to master. See our Iceblade of Narin update and roadmap guide for what is new.
What is the fastest way to raise Mastery Rank?
- Level weapons and Warframes you have not mastered yet, one or two at a time.
- Finish every Star Chart node and Junction, which also unlocks endgame modes.
- Use high-Affinity missions once you are comfortable, then move into the harder mode covered in our Steel Path guide, which adds a second set of node Mastery.
- Build cheap Market and Clan Dojo weapons purely for Mastery, then sell them.
Key point: Mastery is earned once per item and once per node, so variety beats repetition when you are ranking up. RankSurge is independent and is not affiliated with Digital Extremes.
Frequently asked questions
How do you increase Mastery Rank in Warframe?
You raise Mastery Rank by earning Mastery points and then passing a rank test. Points come from levelling gear you have not mastered before, such as weapons, Warframes, companions and Archwings, and from completing Star Chart and Steel Path nodes for the first time. Once you have enough points, start the test from the pause menu. Variety matters most, because each item and node only counts once.
How many Mastery points does each Warframe item give?
A standard weapon gives 100 Mastery points per rank, for 3,000 at rank 30. A Warframe, companion or Archwing gives 200 per rank, for 6,000 at rank 30. Weapons with a rank cap of 40, such as Kuva and Tenet weapons, give 4,000 when fully levelled. Modular items like Zaws, Kitguns and MOA companions need to be gilded before their levels count.
What happens if you fail a Mastery Rank test?
If you fail a Mastery Rank test you must wait 24 hours before you can attempt it again. Your Mastery points are not lost and keep building in the meantime. To avoid the cooldown, practise the test first in Cephalon Simaris' Sanctuary in any Relay, where attempts are free, and bring a fast Warframe and a reliable weapon for combat-based tests.
What does True Master MR 30 unlock?
Reaching Mastery Rank 30, True Master, rewards Umbra Forma, extra Loadout and Riven slots, new emotes and access to the True Master's Font. The Font lets you grant every player in your Relay instance a three-hour blessing once per day, such as bonus Affinity, Credits or resource drop chance. After MR 30, further Mastery counts toward Legendary Ranks.
How do Legendary Ranks work in Warframe?
Legendary Ranks continue Mastery progression after Mastery Rank 30. Each Legendary Rank requires an extra 147,500 Mastery points, and every rank you reach grants a Legendary Core, an item that instantly upgrades a mod to its maximum rank. Because new Warframes and weapons are added with each update, long-term players always have fresh items to level toward the next Legendary Rank.
